Ch. 17 & 18 blog

Chapter seventeen talks about using sources effectively in writings.  It talks about the difference between summarizing and paraphrasing and quotations which we also did in work shop.  These things are used to introduce points in writings.  Quotations also work very well and are often used to support the different sides of a disagreement.  The amount of arguments that can be made is based solely on the amount of material in the sources of the quotations.  When disputing things you must provide evidence.  The evidence is best found from authority sources because this makes the dispute that much more believable.  Using quotes along with this evidence helps you seem even more like an authority.  Quotations can also be used to set the mood of the argument whether that be funny and exciting or sad and depressing.  When explaining things it is better to use an example then to just tell a description.  The reader has an easier time understanding this way.  You must always also use in text citations when using quotes, summarizing, and paraphrasing.  There are two main different styles of citations that are used.  One style is MLA which stands for the modern language association.  Another style is the APA format and the Chicago style.  When using quotations in paragraphs it is better to use fewer quotations but ones that are more relevant to your topic, do not over quote.  Always avoid plagiarism by using proper citations.
When creating your masterpiece there are several qualities that make it more pleasing for the reader to read.  One is the balance of where things like pictures are located on the page.  It is best to try and make things symmetrical.  This leads people to enjoy reading it more.  Another one is the way that titles and headings stand out and how easy they are to spot.  Also that if you use page numbers or headers and footers they should be all the same on each page.  On every page there should be the same size margins and spacing as well.  Different colors, shading, and fonts can make a paper more appealing to the eye of the reader but can sometimes take away from the main points and aspects of the actual paper.  Different spacing can also make the paper nicer to read.  Many times double spacing is preferred because it makes the paper much easier to read.  These things all make papers more interesting to look at.

Developing Criteria

It seems like almost everyone has the same basic way of deciding and writing about stores. Most of the reviews I have seen of places such as Wal-Mart are rating based on things such as how close the store is and how busy it is. There are also factors that affect these reviews such as if you own a car and are capable of easily driving there or you have to walk. There were many reviews of Wal-Mart’s from people that were able to walk there and were happy for that. Some reviews for the same store said they hated the store because they couldn’t understand the employees or other such things like that. People also review about how the stores either had what they wanted or didn’t have what they wanted. The reviews contradicted each other as well because some people reviewed and said that the store had everything that they ever needed and then other reviews said they could never find anything in the store. These reviews have similar criteria but they have total different responses to the criteria. Dealing with restaurants people tend to base reviews on how the service was and how good the food was. If a restaurant has really good service it tends to outweigh the good factor of the food. These reviews are solely based on the personal tastes and views of people and have no actually research behind them. For writing project #2 I will be making annotations and comparing different Alternative recreation places around campus such as the SRC, the Intramural fields, Hayden butte preserve also known as A-mountain, and also the Tempe town lake. Some of the criteria that I will be basing my annotations on are how these places have engaging activities and how many people they draw in and what it takes to use the spaces. Another thing that I will be criticizing these areas on how these locations benefit your health or are a detriment to your health based on the activities that are preformed there. Some of the places are better for some things then others such as the intramural fields which are a very good place to go with your friends and play some soccer or play a game of flag football. There are also many clubs that use the fields for other things such as volley ball. I am hoping to find some articles about the connections between physical activities and your health.

Top Gear USA Evaluation

If you like cars then Top Gear is the show for you.  This is a show that originated in the UK and was only aired on a channel called BBC.  The whole purpose of the show is to tell the good and bad points of cars, new and old.  This show is a huge hit in Europe so The History Channel decided that they would start their very own version right here in the good old USA.  Just as there are three hosts in the British version there are three in the American version as well.  They are Tanner Foust who is world renowned rally car and drift car driver, Rutledge Wood who is a NASCAR analyst, and Adam Ferrara who is an actor and comedian.  In every show there is always a challenge that the three of them have to do.  Each one usually chooses a vehicle from a different manufacturer and competes in whatever the challenge may be.  I’m not really sure sometimes if the different cars are actually better than others sometimes because the driving skills of the three hosts are way different.  This doesn’t seem that it is really an accurate representation of the cars abilities.  Usually whoever wins the challenge gets to drive something else.  For example last week’s episode had each one of the hosts choose a different tractor and they had to see which one was better and the winner would get to drive a Lamborghini Aventador.  I knew from the beginning that tanner was going to win the challenge because it just didn’t seem like the show would want one of the other guys to drive the car.  And that turned out to be true.  This just goes to show that sometimes the show is very predictable in what is going to happen and who is going to win.  When the show aired for the first couple of season’s every episode they would bring a celebrity on the show and they would talk about the cars they used to have and what they have now.  After this they would let them go out on the race track that the show has and the celebrity would race around the track in a car which was the same for all the people that went on the show.  For some reason they quit doing this in the season that is on now.  I think this was a really fun interesting part of the show and it doesn’t make any sense why they stopped.  Also in every episode they used to have a driver called the “stig” who no one knew who he really was and he would take all of the cars that they drive in the challenges around the track for a time, this they stopped doing in the current season as well.  I think that Top Gear is a fun entertaining show but sometimes the comparisons of the cars don’t seem accurate because of the driver’s skills.  I would recommend this as a fun show to watch either way.
